Seoul:Former first lady Kim Keon Hee has appealed an appellate ruling sentencing her to five years in prison for bribery-related charges, bringing the case to the Supreme Court.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul High Court convicted Kim, who is married to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, on charges of accepting bribes for mediation. This ruling partially overturned a lower court's seven-year sentence.
Kim was indicted by a special counsel team for receiving expensive gifts from multiple individuals in exchange for job appointments and business favors between 2022 and 2023. Although a district court convicted her on all counts in June, the appellate court acquitted her of charges related to receiving a luxury watch and a replica of a Joseon Dynasty painting.
The special counsel team also intends to take the case to the Supreme Court.
