Seoul:South Korea secured two gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with remarkable performances in both shooting and fencing.
According to Yonhap News Agency, shooter Choo Ga-eun claimed the women's 10-meter air pistol title with a new Asian record score of 246.3 points, outscoring China's Shen Yijao by five points. Earlier in the day, Choo contributed to South Korea's silver medal in the 10m air pistol team event, having set an Asian Games competition record in the individual qualification round with 582 points. Teammates Kim Bo-mi and Oh Ye-jin helped secure the team total of 1,730 points.
In fencing, Oh Sang-uk retained his men's sabre individual title with a narrow 15-13 win over Shen Chenpeng of China. This victory marked South Korea's fifth consecutive gold in this event, with Oh securing back-to-back titles following three consecutive wins by Gu Bon-gil from 2010 to 2018. Park Ji-hee added a silver medal in the women's foil individual event, losing 15-4 to Yuka Ueno in the final.
Other defending champions faced challenges. In swimming, Hwang Sun-woo settled for silver in the men's 200m freestyle, finishing behind China's Zhang Zhanshuo, who set a new Asian continental record. The women's badminton team, seeking a second consecutive gold, ended with bronze after a 3-1 semifinal loss to Japan. An Se-young won her singles match, but the team lost the subsequent matches.
South Korea also earned additional medals in swimming, with 16-year-old Kim Seung-won taking bronze in the women's 100m backstroke and contributing to a bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. In wushu, Lee Ha-sung claimed silver in the men's daoshu and gunshu, narrowly edging out Malaysia's Clement Su Wei Ting.
The country collected its first medals in athletics and esports, with Choe Byeong-kwang earning bronze in the men's half marathon race walk and Kim Young-chan grabbing bronze in the auto racing game Gran Turismo 7. South Korea's baseball team continued its winning streak, defeating Thailand 18-1 to advance to the Super Round, aiming for a fifth consecutive gold medal. Additionally, the nation picked up bronze medals in men's and women's team table tennis events after semifinal losses to Japan.
