Nagoya:North Korea secured two gold medals in weightlifting at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, ending its gold medal drought on the fourth day of competition.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ri Song-gum clinched a gold medal with a total lift of 215 kilograms, setting new world records in the snatch (94kg), clean and jerk (121kg), and overall total in the women's 48kg event at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Center. Mirabai Chanu Saikhom of India and Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana of Indonesia took silver and bronze, respectively.
This victory marked North Korea's first gold at the Asian Games in Japan and Ri's third consecutive win in the lightest weight class since 2018. Ri previously claimed the world championship titles in 2024 and 2025.
In the women's 53kg final, Kang Hyon-gyong of North Korea lifted a total of 223kg, breaking the Asian Games record across all categories. This win was Kang's second consecutive Asian Games title. Zhao Jinlan from China and Surodchana Khambao from Thailand secured the silver and bronze medals.
North Korea's success in women's weightlifting has earned them five medals overall, placing them ninth in the medal standings with two golds, one silver, and two bronzes.
