Lima: President Yoon Suk Yeol and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned military cooperation between North Korea and Russia and agreed to expand security and defense industry cooperation during their summit in Peru on Friday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, following the inaugural two-plus-two foreign and defense ministerial meeting held in Ottawa earlier this month. According to Yonhap News Agency, the two leaders criticized the military collaboration between Russia and North Korea and discussed the latest developments regarding the deployment of North Korean forces to Russia. They agreed to collaborate for a unified response to these activities. Yoon acknowledged Canada's contribution to promoting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, given its role as a member of the United Nations Command, which enforces the Korean War Armistice Agreement. Additionally, Yoon highlighted the upcoming 10th anniversary of the bilateral free tr ade agreement next year, expressing hope for stronger economic ties between the two countries. In response, Trudeau suggested capitalizing on the momentum from the recent 2+2 meeting to enhance security cooperation, emphasizing collaboration in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and clean energy sectors. Trudeau also noted the scheduled first shipment of Canadian liquefied natural gas to South Korea next year and expressed a desire to work together to establish a stable energy supply chain. As South Korea prepares to host the APEC summit and Canada assumes the G7 presidency next year, the leaders committed to creating synergies in multilateral diplomacy efforts.
