Palm Beach:U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is willing to engage in discussions with North Korea if it is confirmed to be responsible for the theft of over $6 billion from Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally. Trump made these comments at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida following an announcement by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) implicating North Korea in the virtual asset theft that occurred on or about October 29.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the FBI has identified the North Korean cyber operation involved in the theft as "TraderTraitor," a group previously linked to cryptocurrency heists by North Korean hackers. The FBI noted that the stolen assets were mainly converted into Ethereum, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation division. The agency cautioned that the hackers are likely to continue laundering the assets through decentralized finance platforms and cryptocurrency exchange services.
The FBI, along with the U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service, has urged cryptocurrency exchanges and other virtual asset service providers to block transactions from digital wallet addresses linked to the North Korean hackers. This announcement followed an assessment from U.S. blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, which attributed the estimated $6.36 billion Binance theft to TraderTraitor.
Speculation regarding possible renewed diplomacy between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been reignited by these developments. Trump and Kim previously held three meetings during Trump's first term as President. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Trump remains open to discussions with Kim, provided Pyongyang is willing to address issues important to Washington and its allies, although no talks have been scheduled yet.
