Teachers’ Groups Demand Resignation of President Yoon Over Martial Law Declaration

SEOUL: Several teachers' groups have demanded the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol following his recent declaration of martial law, which they have characterized as an act of "violence" grounded in "hatred" and "ostracism." According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Language Teachers Association, which consists of educators specializing in the Korean language, issued a statement condemning President Yoon's actions. They accused him of inciting violence and threatening punitive measures against those holding differing opinions. The association pledged to continue their opposition until what they described as the "ringleader of insurrection" is ousted, and called for decisive action against those undermining parliamentary democracy. The statement from the Korean Language Teachers Association is supported by 2,511 signatories since its release earlier in the week. They urged lawmakers to support a parliamentary motion to impeach President Yoon and advocate for the swift arrest of those responsible for t he current political unrest. This call for resignation follows a similar demand last week from a group of over 2,300 Korean history teachers, who also urged President Yoon to relinquish his post immediately. In a related development, another collective known as "teachers determined to safeguard democracy" is planning to release a statement at the National Assembly, backed by more than 3,600 teachers, stressing their desire to uphold democratic values for their students.
