Special Counsel Raids Ex-PM Han’s House in Martial Law Probe

Seoul: Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-suk's team on Thursday raided the residence of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is suspected of participating in or at least assisting former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration.

According to Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors and investigators from the special counsel conducted a search of Han's residence in the central Seoul district of Jongno in the morning. The prime minister's residence in Jongno's Samcheong-dong was also included in their raid.

The special counsel suspects that Han did not actively block Yoon's martial law imposition on December 3 of last year but rather attempted to give it procedural legitimacy, despite his status as a key member of the Cabinet. It also accuses Han of being an accomplice in the drafting and destruction of a revised version of the martial law decree.

Han testified at the National Assembly in February that he was not aware of the martial law decree until the Cabinet meeting lifted the martial law on December 4 and later realized it was in the back pocket of his suit. However, the special counsel has reportedly secured surveillance camera footage from the presidential office that shows Han reviewing martial law documents.

The raid occurred 22 days after Han was questioned by the special counsel team on July 2. The special counsel plans to summon Han again after completing its analysis of the seized materials. There is speculation that the special counsel may request an arrest warrant for Han, considering the seriousness of the case.
