Pyongyang:North Korea has conducted a test of a cluster bomb designed to be mounted on tactical ballistic missiles, as reported by its state media. The test was aimed at evaluating the adaptation to combat and the power of a cluster-bomb warhead, According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the test was carried out by the North's Missile Administration on Saturday. Gen. Kim Jong-sik, a member of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and the first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee, oversaw the procedure.
The cluster bomb, which releases dozens to hundreds of submunitions, is designed to strike multiple targets over a wide area. Research institutes under the Missile Administration confirmed that the Standard Type 2 cluster-bomb warhead can devastate a target area of 12 to 13 hectares with its highest-density power.
The general director of the Missile Administration highlighted that the cluster bomb warheads are divided into four categories based on their purposes. The director stated, "Within this year, we will enable units to select and use all those types according to operational aims and specific features of targets."
In April, North Korea had announced the testing of cluster bombs mounted on the Hwasong-11 Ra tactical ballistic missile, a launch that was overseen by leader Kim Jong-un and his daughter Ju-ae. The objective of that launch was to evaluate the power of the cluster bomb warhead and the fragmentation mine warhead fitted to the weapon system.
