Seoul: The veterans ministry has posthumously recognized a late U.S. captain as the hero of September for his significant role in a crucial amphibious landing operation during the 1950-53 Korean War.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the late U.S. Capt. William Shaw was honored for his vital contributions to the success of the Incheon Landing Operation. He assisted U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the strategic city of Incheon, located just west of Seoul, in September 1950. This operation was instrumental in altering the course of the war by successfully repelling the advancing North Korean forces.
Shaw, who was born in South Korea to American missionaries in 1922, volunteered for military service after learning about the Korean War's outbreak. His dedication led him to participate in the pivotal Incheon operation, and subsequently, he was involved in the battle to reclaim Seoul from North Korean forces. Tragically, Shaw lost his life in September 1950 during an attack by a concealed enemy. His final resting place is at a missionary cemetery in western Seoul.
In recognition of his bravery and sacrifices, the South Korean government awarded Shaw the Eulji Order of Military Merit posthumously in 1956.
