Oslo: Hanwha Aerospace Co., a South Korean defense company, announced its intention to strengthen its position as a long-term security partner in the Nordic region. This announcement comes in the wake of the company securing a significant contract to supply rocket systems to Norway.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Son Jae-il, president and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, emphasized that Norway's decision to select the company's Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) demonstrates trust built from previous deliveries of Hanwha's K9 self-propelled howitzers. The company highlighted this achievement in a press release, underscoring their commitment to enhancing security in the Nordic region through collaboration with Norway and expanding their strategic security partnerships.
The contract, finalized with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) last Friday, involves Hanwha Aerospace supplying 16 Chunmoo MLRS units, precision-guided missiles, and integrated logistics support to the Norwegian Armed Forces. The agreement is valued at approximately US$2 billion.
Norway's decision is part of an ongoing collaboration between Hanwha Aerospace and the Norwegian military, who have acquired 52 K9 Vidar self-propelled howitzers and 14 K10 ammunition resupply vehicles from the company since 2017. The company has expressed its intention to deepen cooperation with the Norwegian industry through joint development and local testing as it seeks to broaden its influence in the Nordic defense sector.
