Government Considers Measures After DMZ Mine Blast

Seoul:The government is considering "all possible measures" in response to an explosion involving North Korean land mines inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last week, according to a senior official.

According to Yonhap News Agency, three South Korean military officers were injured on September 21 during a search operation in the DMZ's western sector. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) attributed the blast to North Korea and demanded an apology and responsible actions from Pyongyang.

A foreign ministry official described the incident as a stark reminder of national security's importance and mentioned that the government is reviewing past cases and potential United Nations involvement. Actions will be taken once the investigation concludes.

The official referenced a similar 2015 incident where North Korean land mines injured two South Korean soldiers. Following that event, the South Korean government sent a letter to the U.N. Security Council, resumed loudspeaker broadcasts along the border, and increased military preparedness.

The U.N. Command, responsible for overseeing the border area, stated that the recent explosion violates the Armistice Agreement that ended the Korean War in 1953. However, North Korea denied responsibility, alleging that South Korea fabricated the findings and warned of retaliation if attacked.
