U.S. Army and South Korean Navy Collaborate on Sustainment Modernization

Seoul: Personnel from the U.S. Army based in South Korea visited the South Korean Navy's maintenance depot last week as part of their cooperation to promote sustainment modernization, the Eighth Army said Thursday. The collaboration aimed to explore future opportunities for enhancing military readiness and interoperability between the two forces.

According to Yonhap News Agency, officials from the 2nd Infantry Division and the Materiel Support Command-Korea visited the Navy's facility on March 25. During their visit, they toured manufacturing labs for advanced metal and non-metal additives to understand the processes involved in sustaining military equipment.

The visit highlighted the South Korean naval forces' use of metal 3D printing technology to repair high-value components on front-line destroyers. This system has significantly reduced maintenance time, showcasing the potential benefits of adopting similar technologies within the alliance.

By integrating lessons from the South Korean Navy, the alliance is focused on building a more robust, modern, and interoperable sustainment network. This effort is aimed at ensuring both forces are prepared for any future challenges, reflecting a commitment to ongoing modernization and cooperation.
