Trump to Impose Additional 10% Global Tariff Using 1974 Trade Act

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose an additional 10 percent global tariff under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, criticizing Supreme Court justices for ruling against his previous emergency tariffs and describing them as a "disgrace to our nation."

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump stated during a press conference that his administration possesses "even stronger measures" than the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which the Supreme Court recently struck down. This includes "reciprocal" tariffs on South Korea and other trading partners. Trump emphasized his intent to use Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, allowing him to impose import restrictions, including tariffs, by signing an order for the additional 10 percent global tariff.

The president also announced the initiation of several Section 301 and other investigations aimed at protecting the country from what he described as unfair trading practices by other nations and companies. He indicated that the new tariff might take effect "three days from now."

Trump highlighted the availability of other legal authorities to uphold his tariff policy, stating that there are methods and statutes stronger than those provided by the IEEPA. He expressed that foreign countries, which he claimed have been exploiting the U.S., were pleased with the court's decision, but asserted that their satisfaction would be short-lived.

He further criticized the Supreme Court, arguing that it has been influenced by foreign interests and a political movement that he believes is smaller than perceived.
