Atlanta:U.S. President Donald Trump remains open to discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un if Pyongyang is willing to address issues concerning Washington and its allies. However, no meeting between the two leaders has been scheduled, as stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Rubio made these remarks at a press conference after a Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta. He emphasized President Trump's willingness to engage in talks if North Korea is prepared to discuss concerns shared by the United States and its allies, such as South Korea.
Rubio clarified that while the possibility of renewed diplomacy between Trump and Kim has sparked speculation, there is currently no scheduled meeting to announce. His comments followed trilateral discussions with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts, where they reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea's complete denuclearization.
Rubio also addressed recent U.S. visa issues involving South Korean legislators, suggesting that the two countries will resolve these matters bilaterally. He mentioned a specific case involving visa delays due to past behavior concerns but assured that it would be addressed between the two nations. Rep. Jin Sung-joon of South Korea's ruling Democratic Party reported being issued a U.S. visa for a visit to the U.S. Pacific Command after initially facing rejection, a situation similar to that of Rep. Jung Chung-rae earlier in the month.
