Ohio:U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he "gets along great" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during a campaign rally, emphasizing the importance of maintaining positive relations with leaders of nuclear-armed countries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump made these comments as he discussed his interactions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and defended his relationships with leaders of major global powers. He pointed out the significance of getting along with leaders of "massive nuclear nations."
In August, Trump expressed his hope to meet Kim Jong-un later in the year, fueling speculation about a potential revival of his personal diplomatic efforts with North Korea. These efforts previously led to three in-person meetings: in Singapore in June 2018, Hanoi in February 2019, and the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom.
Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the State Department, indicated that Trump does not consider talks with North Korea a "concession" and remains open to engaging with Pyongyang if it aligns with U.S. national interests.
During the rally, Trump mentioned the advantage of having amicable relations with a leader who possesses "112 nuclear missiles," though he did not clarify what this number represented. In an earlier statement in August, he claimed North Korea had 57 nuclear weapons, leaving the context of the latest figure uncertain.
Trump's remarks come amid North Korea's continued refusal to denuclearize, asserting its nuclear weapon status as "irreversible."
