President Lee Calls for Investigation into Data Breaches at Financial Institutions

Seoul:President Lee Jae Myung has urged a comprehensive investigation into recent hacking incidents that have resulted in personal data leaks at major banks and other financial institutions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, several banks, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank, experienced successive breaches of customer information due to these hacking attacks. On Thursday, Shinhan Bank revealed that personal data of approximately 25,000 customers, such as names, phone numbers, and annual income, had been compromised. Hackers reportedly employed advanced artificial intelligence tools in the attack.

Hana Bank reported a leak affecting 89 customers, while similar hacking attempts targeted Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank. However, these banks managed to prevent unauthorized access to their systems, avoiding data leaks.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that President Lee has been briefed on the data breaches and the responsive measures. He has instructed authorities to seriously address the issue, conduct a thorough investigation, and implement effective measures to tackle the problem.

An emergency meeting involving Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon, Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin, and heads of the affected firms is scheduled to take place later today to discuss the situation further.
