Nagoya:South Korea's men's and women's football teams have both advanced to the semifinals at the Asian Games.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the men's team, led by coach Lee Min-sung, secured their spot by defeating Vietnam 4-0 in the quarterfinals at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Rugby Field in Japan. The team, composed of under-23 players known as the Taegeuk Warriors, is aiming for the country's fourth consecutive gold medal in men's football. They will face the winner of the China-Thailand match in the semifinals on Wednesday at Nagai Stadium in Osaka.
Grasshopper forward Lee Young-jun joined the team recently and scored twice, contributing significantly to the victory. Other goals came from center back Kim Ji-soo and Kim Myeong-jun, who has scored in all of South Korea's matches so far.
In the women's tournament, South Korea triumphed over Uzbekistan with a 6-3 win at Nagai Stadium. Coach Shin Sang-woo's team, the Taegeuk Ladies, are pursuing their first gold in Asiad women's football after having previously won three bronze medals. Their next match is against Japan, following Japan's 4-0 victory over the Philippines. This semifinal will take place on Tuesday at Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa in Fukuroi.
Yun Su-jeong was pivotal in the women's victory, achieving a hat trick. South Korea built a significant lead in the first half, and despite a brief resurgence from Uzbekistan, maintained their advantage with further goals from Yun and Kim Min-ji.
Both South Korean teams could potentially face North Korea in the final or bronze medal matches, as North Korea is positioned on the opposite side of the tournament brackets.
