Seoul: South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back emphasized the country's efforts to bolster its self-reliant defense capabilities while reinforcing its alliance with the United States. This comes in response to evolving threats from North Korea and uncertainties in the Middle East.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Minister Ahn addressed a defense forum in Singapore, highlighting North Korea's growing military alignment with Russia and the implications of its combat experience gained from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These developments present new security challenges not only on the Korean Peninsula but also across the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Ahn noted that North Korea's military advancements, particularly in nuclear and missile capabilities, contribute to regional instability. He underscored the importance of South Korea's efforts to enhance its self-reliant defense capabilities while simultaneously strengthening its alliance with the United States. The minister detailed South Korea's initiatives to advance its three-axis defense system, which includes the KAMD missile shield, the Kill Chain strike platform, and the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation system.
The U.S. extended deterrence commitment, encompassing the use of its full military capabilities to defend allies, was also highlighted as a critical element of the defense strategy. In response to the evolving nature of warfare, South Korea is developing a "smart military" utilizing artificial intelligence and drone technologies, aiming to play a leading role in the defense of the Korean Peninsula.
Minister Ahn reiterated Seoul's dedication to continued dialogue with Pyongyang, advocating for peace through diplomatic engagement while maintaining robust deterrence against threats from North Korea. He stressed that the most reliable form of security is achieved through peace that eliminates the need for war.
Additionally, Ahn expressed South Korea's commitment to ensuring security in strategic maritime regions, including the Strait of Hormuz, amidst ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions. He emphasized the importance of upholding freedom of navigation in accordance with international law and mentioned that South Korea is actively exploring practical measures to contribute to these efforts based on domestic legal considerations.
