South Korea Wins Asian Games Football Gold Amid Challenges

Nagoya:South Korea Minutes after securing the men's football gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, South Korea's head coach Lee Min-sung credited his players for overcoming difficult circumstances to achieve victory.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee expressed regret that his players did not receive the recognition they deserved due to his role as their coach. Despite criticisms of their play quality, Lee emphasized that achieving results at this competition was paramount, and he is proud of his players for their performance.

South Korea defeated Japan 1-0 with a 61st-minute goal by Eom Ji-sung at Toyota Stadium, located approximately 30 kilometers east of Nagoya. Although Japan dominated much of the match, their attempts were thwarted by a resilient South Korean defense.

Lee acknowledged the challenges faced, including different pitch conditions and the pressure of competing for a gold medal. He praised his team for their perseverance and patience in securing the win.

Despite his reluctance to single out players, Lee identified Celtic FC winger Yang Hyun-jun as his MVP, citing Yang's behind-the-scenes sacrifices despite being limited to one match due to a hamstring injury.

At the tournament's outset, Lee hoped the gold medal would boost South Korean football, especially after the senior national team's early exit from the FIFA World Cup. While uncertain if the victory alone would revitalize the sport, Lee is optimistic that his players will progress and strengthen the senior team, forming the foundation for Korean football's future.
