Seoul: Son Heung-min became the most-capped male player in South Korean football history Friday. Son earned his 137th cap by getting into the starting lineup in a friendly match against Brazil at Seoul World Cup Stadium, breaking a three-way tie with his current national team head coach Hong Myung-bo and former forward Cha Bum-kun.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Son is also chasing down the men's goals record held by Cha. Son is sitting at 53 goals, five back of Cha, having netted a goal in each of his past two matches. Since joining Los Angeles Football Club in early August, Son has scored eight goals and provided three assists in nine matches, including a recent streak of seven goals in four matches.
At 33, Son made his first senior international appearance as an 18-year-old on Dec. 30, 2010, in a friendly against Syria. He has played for South Korea in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups, and in the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cups in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. The women's national team record is held by Ji So-yun, with 169 caps and 74 goals.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) plans to celebrate Son's accomplishment before the team's next match against Paraguay at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Cha Bum-kun will be present to congratulate Son on surpassing him on the leaderboard.
In Friday's match, Son was joined by Lee Jae-sung, who earned his 100th cap, making him the 16th South Korean man to join the FIFA Century Club. Jo Hyeon-woo started in goal, with Kim Ju-sung, Kim Min-jae, and Cho Yu-min as center backs in Hong's back-three formation. Wingbacks Lee Tae-seok and Seol Young-woo provided support on the flanks, with Hwang In-beom and Paik Seung-ho as defensive midfielders. Lee Jae-sung and Lee Kang-win played as attacking midfielders behind Son.
Brazil's lineup featured Real Madrid stars Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo up front, Eder Militao in defense, and Manchester United's Casemiro as captain, accompanied by Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes in midfield.
