Seoul: Nearly 40 million user accounts of the South Korean streaming platform Tving were compromised in a significant data breach resulting from a hacking incident reported in June, a joint investigation revealed on Thursday. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the findings of a three-month government-civilian investigation into the breach at Tving, an online video streaming platform operated by entertainment giant CJ ENM Co.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the breach marks one of the largest data compromises in South Korea, raising concerns over cybersecurity measures in place for online platforms. The investigation highlighted vulnerabilities that were exploited by hackers, leading to unauthorized access and exposure of user information. The authorities are now focusing on strengthening security protocols to prevent future occurrences and safeguard user data.
In related developments, President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the need for police reform amid a shift in investigative authority. Following the recent passage of a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act, which transfers prosecutors' investigative powers entirely to the police, Lee called for internal reforms within the police force during a meeting with his top aides.
Additionally, the South Korean won reached a near 14-month high against the U.S. dollar, influenced by the strengthening of Japan's yen. The won was quoted at 1,359.3 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., reflecting an increase of 9.4 won from the previous stock trading session's close.
On labor matters, the labor ministry introduced new guidelines excluding profit-linked bonus demands from mandatory collective bargaining. The guidelines aim to clarify the revised trade union law, enhancing subcontracted workers' bargaining rights and increasing prime contractors' accountability.
Meanwhile, ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, South Korea urged its athletes to make their country proud. The Korean Sport and Olympic Committee held a launch ceremony for the national delegation for the 20th Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi prefecture from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, with Nagoya serving as the main host city.
