Seoul: The presidential office said Sunday it will carefully deliberate its response to U.S. President Donald Trump's request to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz in close consultation with Washington. A presidential official stated that South Korea had acknowledged Trump's social media post regarding the important oil shipping route in the Gulf region.
According to Yonhap News Agency, on Saturday, Trump urged South Korea and other countries affected by Iran's attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz to deploy ships to maintain the strait's openness and safety. This request comes amid increasing concerns over potential disruptions to shipping along this vital waterway. Trump also named China, France, Japan, and Britain as countries impacted by Iran's actions, which he described as an "artificial constraint" on the strait.
The official emphasized that the safety of international maritime routes and the freedom of navigation are in the interests of all countries and are protected by international law. Based on this principle, South Korea expressed hope that the global maritime logistics network would return to normalcy swiftly.
