Seoul: South Korea has emphasized the importance of political solutions for resolving international conflicts and security threats through dialogue, aiming to enhance U.N. peacekeeping operations amidst global challenges, the foreign ministry announced.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Kyung-chul, the high representative for U.N. Security Council (UNSC) affairs, delivered a statement during a UNSC briefing on international peace and security. He highlighted the essential role that U.N. peacekeeping plays in maintaining global peace.

Lee asserted that political solutions are crucial in any combination of peacebuilding strategies, emphasizing the need for a credible political foundation to make peace efforts truly effective. He called on UNSC members, the UN Secretariat, and other stakeholders to fulfill their responsibilities in addressing armed conflicts and security threats through dialogue and negotiation. Lee reiterated South Korea's commitment to participating in these efforts.

Lee also advocated for "pragmatism and efficiency" in peacekeeping operations by incorporating new technologies such as artificial intelligence. He stressed the importance of "systemwide coordination" within the U.N. to improve peace operations.

During the briefing, Lee engaged with Pakistani Ambassador to the U.N. Asim Ahmad to discuss UNSC-related matters. Pakistan had served as the UNSC chair in July. Lee also held separate meetings with top and deputy U.N. envoys from countries including Britain, the United States, China, and France to discuss issues related to North Korea, the Korean Peninsula, and situations in the Middle East and Africa, along with other U.N. peacekeeping-related topics.
