Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has elected three-term lawmaker Han Byung-do as its new floor leader, following the resignation of his predecessor amid allegations of misconduct. Han, representing a district in Iksan, emerged victorious in a runoff against Rep. Back Hye-ryun after none of the four candidates secured a majority in the initial vote.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the first round of voting combined ballots from DP representatives and an online vote from general party members with voting rights, weighted at an 8:2 ratio. The other candidates in the initial round included Reps. Jin Sung-joon and Park Jeung.
In his acceptance speech at a general DP lawmakers' meeting at the National Assembly, Han stated his commitment to advancing state tasks and improving public livelihoods to support the Lee Jae Myung administration. He also emphasized the need to address internal party conflicts, particularly those stemming from bribery allegations involving his predecessor, Rep. Kim Byung-kee, and former DP lawmaker Kang Sun-woo.
Han, a former senior secretary for political affairs under President Moon Jae-in, is known for his close ties to the pro-Moon faction. He has also held significant roles within the party, serving as chief of strategy and planning for then-DP leader Lee Jae Myung and as operations room chief for Lee's presidential campaign.
The election follows Kim's resignation last month amid accusations of preferential treatment and power abuse. Han will complete the remainder of Kim's term until May.
Additionally, the DP conducted a vote to elect three new members to its supreme council, filling vacancies left by those who resigned to pursue regional elections in June. Reps. Kang Deuk-gu, Lee Sung-yoon, and Moon Jeong-bog were elected, while Rep. Lee Geon-tae withdrew after ranking fourth.
