Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has elected Han Byung-do, a three-term lawmaker, as its new floor leader, succeeding Rep. Kim Byung-kee who resigned amid allegations of misconduct.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han, representing a district in Iksan, emerged victorious in a runoff against Rep. Back Hye-ryun. The election process involved a combined vote from DP representatives and an online vote among general party members with voting rights, weighted in an 8:2 ratio. The initial round featured four candidates, including Reps. Jin Sung-joon and Park Jeung.
Han has a notable political background, having served as senior secretary for political affairs to former President Moon Jae-in and as a key member of the pro-Moon faction. His career also includes roles such as chief of strategy and planning for former DP leader Lee Jae Myung and operations room chief for Lee's presidential campaign last year.
The election of the new floor leader follows the resignation of Rep. Kim Byung-kee, who stepped down last month facing accusations of receiving preferential treatment and abuse of power. Han will complete the remainder of Kim's term, which ends in May.
In addition to the floor leader election, the DP conducted a vote to fill three supreme council vacancies left by members running for regional elections in June. Reps. Kang Deuk-gu, Lee Sung-yoon, and Moon Jeong-bog were elected, while Rep. Lee Geon-tae dropped out after ranking fourth.
