Rival Parties Clash Over Resolution Condemning North Korea for DMZ Mine Blast

Seoul:The ruling Democratic Party (DP) and the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) engaged in a heated debate on Tuesday over a parliamentary resolution condemning North Korea for recent land mine explosions near the inter-Korean border. These explosions injured three South Korean soldiers.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP urged the PPP to swiftly adopt the resolution. Meanwhile, the PPP sought further discussions to amend the resolution's details, emphasizing the need to label the blasts explicitly as a provocation by North Korea.

PPP Representative Lim Jong-deuk criticized the government's ambiguous stance, which he argued downplayed the incidents as mere accidents. Both parties presented their versions of the resolution regarding the September 29 and October 2 explosions, with the defense committee working to finalize a draft for adoption.

Lim further criticized the DP for attempting to push the resolution without adequate consultation with the opposition. Another PPP member, Yoo Yeong-ha, argued for clear language in the resolution to characterize the incidents as provocations by North Korea, in line with acknowledgments from Democratic Party leaders.

The DP maintained that their draft resolution already called for a strong governmental response. Defense committee chair Rep. Jin Sung-joon called for a subcommittee meeting to reconcile differences and prepare a resolution for a plenary session.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that a joint investigation with the U.N. Command attributed the September 21 explosions to mines deliberately planted by North Korea south of the Military Demarcation Line. North Korea has denied these allegations, accusing South Korea of fabricating the findings.
