Seoul:President Lee Jae Myung has called for a comprehensive restructuring of South Korea's social system to address the challenges posed by rapid demographic changes, highlighting the potential of artificial intelligence to revamp sectors such as industry, employment, and education.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this call was made during a meeting of the presidential committee on population strategy. The meeting, which included government ministers and citizens, focused on designing effective population policies for the nation.
South Korea is experiencing a demographic shift with its population rapidly aging. Individuals aged 65 and older now constitute over 21 percent of the total population, categorizing the country as a "super-aged society." In response to this, President Lee emphasized the necessity for policies promoting both qualitative and quantitative population growth, advocating for a significant overhaul of the country's population strategies.
President Lee stressed that South Korea's social and economic frameworks need a complete redesign to align with demographic changes. He identified sectors such as labor, welfare, employment, housing, and childcare as areas requiring policy updates. The president also pointed out that innovations driven by artificial intelligence present a unique chance to restructure these systems, especially in employment, education, elderly care, and childcare.
Additionally, President Lee highlighted the rise in the immigrant population and the development of diverse family structures as new demographic trends. He asserted that the primary objective should be to create a society where everyone can lead fulfilling lives throughout their life cycles.
He concluded by stating that solutions to population issues would emerge when people have confidence that they and their families can grow and thrive happily, regardless of their living situation.
