Baku:Washington New White House Press Secretary Katie Zachariah announced that US$54 billion is earmarked for an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project as part of a South Korean energy investment package. This announcement was made despite uncertainties regarding Seoul's participation in the project.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Zachariah emphasized the South Korean energy investment package, which could reach up to $200 billion. This package was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month.
Zachariah highlighted that the investment package includes $120 billion for the construction of eight large-scale nuclear power plants. Additionally, the package allocates $54 billion for the Alaska LNG pipeline and terminal, intended to serve the Pacific Rim and provide fuel to U.S. allies. A further $22.3 billion is set aside for a 6-gigawatt natural gas power facility in Texas.
Following the announcement by President Trump, South Korea's industry ministry noted that the Alaska project had not yet been finalized. The ministry stated that factors such as commercial viability would need to be assessed before any investment decisions are made.
