Prime Minister Urges Comprehensive Security System Overhaul After Cyberattacks

Seoul:Prime Minister Han Seong-sook has called for a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's information protection system in response to recent cyberattacks on major financial institutions, which have exposed the inadequacy of current security measures.

According to Yonhap News Agency, several financial firms, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank, have recently experienced back-to-back leaks of customer information. President Lee Jae Myung has emphasized the seriousness of these incidents, calling for a thorough investigation.

During a meeting on Tuesday with relevant ministers, Prime Minister Han warned of the potential for artificial intelligence to be used in phishing attacks, which could lead to further damage. She expressed concern that similar hacking methods could spread from the financial sector to other industries, as well as government and public sectors.

Prime Minister Han stated that the rise in such security breaches highlights the insufficiency of existing security awareness, systems, and government frameworks in the rapidly changing information landscape. She emphasized the need for vigilance across government agencies, public institutions, the financial sector, and private enterprises.

Additionally, Han instructed the police to thoroughly investigate the incidents using all available resources. She also urged financial authorities to ensure that affected institutions implement proper customer protection measures and provide compensation for damages.
