Son Heung-min Sets Record as South Korea’s Top Male Goal Scorer

Yongin:Son Heung-min has become the all-time leading male goal scorer in South Korean football, achieving this milestone with his 59th goal in a friendly match against Uzbekistan.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Son scored the record-breaking goal with a free kick in the sixth minute at Yongin Mireu Stadium, located about 40 kilometers south of Seoul. At 34 years old, Son surpassed the previous record held by former striker Cha Bum-kun. He had equaled Cha's record with a goal against Uruguay last Monday and needed just two more matches to claim the title.

In addition to his scoring record, Son is also the most-capped male player for South Korea, with 151 appearances. His international career began on December 30, 2010, against Syria, and he scored his first goal against India on January 18, 2011, during the AFC Asian Cup.

Son has represented South Korea in the FIFA World Cups of 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026, and has participated in the Asian Cups of 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. In women's football, Ji So-yun holds the record as South Korea's all-time leader, with 76 goals in 182 appearances.
