Seoul: The People Power Party (PPP) has initiated the first phase of its primary process to determine four potential candidates for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for June. This primary comes in the wake of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from office on April 4, following a failed attempt to impose martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the PPP intends to conduct public opinion polls involving eight contenders by Tuesday. The election is set for June 3, with a second round where two candidates will be chosen through a combination of 50 percent party member votes and 50 percent public opinion polling. The final candidate representing the PPP in the presidential election will be announced on May 3.

In their efforts to capture the electorate's attention, candidates are intensifying their campaign strategies. Former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo is anticipated to propose an expansion of the nation's high-speed commuter rail network. Meanwhile, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo is set to reveal new welfare initiatives and engage with the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea.

Adding to the campaign trail, former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon will make an appearance in Gyeongju, the host city for the forthcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November. PPP legislators Ahn Cheol-soo and Na Kyung-won will travel to the conservative bastion of Daegu in southeastern Korea to rally local support.
