Seoul: National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik on Thursday called on China to actively contribute to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the necessity for collaborative efforts between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cho made these remarks during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing at the National Assembly. He expressed optimism that the countries will enhance their friendly relations, following the recent 34th anniversary of diplomatic ties between South Korea and China.

Cho highlighted the South Korean government's ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue with North Korea, with the ultimate goal of peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity between the two Koreas. "Peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula are an important task that South Korea and China should work together to address," he stated, urging China to take a constructive role in reducing regional tensions and facilitating dialogue.

He also underscored the significance of parliamentary exchanges in strengthening bilateral relations and expressed his intention to meet with China's top legislator, Zhao Leji, soon to further this cause.

During the discussion, Ambassador Dai conveyed his hopes that the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, in November will offer an opportunity for leaders from both countries to engage in meaningful dialogue. The ambassador assured that China remains dedicated to maintaining peace and stability and is committed to playing a constructive role on the Korean Peninsula.
