Opposition Lawmakers Rally in Seoul Against Lee Administration

Seoul:Dozens of lawmakers from the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) held a rally in central Seoul on Saturday to voice their opposition to President Lee Jae Myung's prosecution reform and his administration's response to a recent incident involving North Korean mines.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the rally, led by PPP leader Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, saw the participation of nearly 70 PPP lawmakers and was claimed by the party to have attracted around 200,000 protesters.

PPP floor leader Rep. Jeong Jeom-sig criticized President Lee for not condemning North Korea over the "mine provocation" that has escalated tensions between the two Koreas. The incident in question occurred on September 21, when North Korean land mines exploded inside the Demilitarized Zone, injuring three South Korean soldiers, two of them seriously.

Rep. Lim Jong-deuk pointed out that President Lee's characterization of the blast as an "unfortunate accident" during his Armed Forces Day speech demonstrated a "submissive" stance towards North Korea.

Further criticism was directed at Lee's prosecution reform efforts and his decision to expand the number of Supreme Court justices, with accusations that these moves are aimed at protecting himself from ongoing legal challenges. This rally is the first significant street demonstration by PPP lawmakers since the previous one in late September last year.
