Naver Unveils New AI Initiatives for Enhanced Search and Shopping Services.

Seoul: South Korean tech giant Naver Corp. announced plans to integrate its self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its major services, including its search platform and shopping application, during its tech conference, DAN24, in Seoul. According to Yonhap News Agency, Naver unveiled its "On-Service AI" plan, which aims to enhance its major services with cutting-edge technology. Under the plan, the Korean company will incorporate its hyperscale AI model, HyperCLOVA X, into its search engine to provide more customized answers to users' queries. Additionally, a brand new AI briefing function is set to launch in the first half of next year, delivering summarized, AI-generated answers to user questions along with sources to verify the credibility of the information. The new service will initially be available in Korean, English, and Japanese. Unlike conversational AI models such as ChatGPT, Naver is focusing on using AI to improve its search function by reducing hallucinations and providing more diversified answers based on different content. "We showcased HyperCLOVA X last year and after a year of testing our generative AI products with our users, sellers, and business partners, we are now moving toward commercialization," Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon said. Choi emphasized the company's commitment to breaking down the boundaries between online and offline experiences and providing AI services that genuinely enhance daily life. In the first half of the year, Naver will also introduce an AI shopping application, Naver plus store, featuring an AI-powered shopping navigation function to help users find products and promotions tailored to their needs. Furthermore, Naver plans to update its mobile map application with geospatial AI technology next year, aiming to digitally recreate offline locations and offer more accurate information about various destinations. The company also announced plans to create an impact fund and invest a combined 1 trillion won over the next six years to support the growth of South Korea's AI ecosystem. CEO Choi Soo-yeon also mentioned that Naver is closely monitoring the potential impact of a second Donald Trump presidency, as the incoming administration may lift regulations on Naver's big tech rivals in the United States. Amid increasing global tech market competition, Naver is committed to responsibly internalizing core technologies like AI, recognizing its significant role in South Korea's content industry. Naver plans to allocate 20-25 percent of its sales to AI research and development, according to company officials.
