Seoul: The National Assembly on Monday passed a significant bill that reclassifies artificial intelligence (AI)-generated educational resources from official textbooks to "education materials," effectively reversing the previous administration's nationwide plan to integrate AI digital textbooks.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the revised Elementary and Secondary Education Act designates AI-generated content as optional supplementary tools rather than compulsory educational materials. This legislative decision follows strong opposition from lawmakers of the main opposition People Power Party, who criticized the revision for potentially hindering classroom innovation and limiting educational opportunities for underprivileged students.

The initial push for AI digital textbooks was a key initiative under former President Yoon Suk Yeol. However, the proposal faced considerable resistance from educators, who raised concerns about increased screen time for students, possible negative impacts on literacy skills, and financial constraints associated with implementing the new system.

Previously, the revision had gained approval under President Yoon's administration but was ultimately nullified by a presidential veto. The newly enacted measure will be effective immediately upon promulgation and will remain in force until December 31, 2027.
