Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has expressed optimism for a "more excellent future" in the country's relationship with Russia in a message addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This message was reported by the North's state media on Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Jong-un's message was in response to Putin's congratulatory note marking the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. Kim stated, "I am always proud to be able to expect more excellent future of the bilateral relations by leading, together with you, the DPRK-Russia ties that has carried forward the history of common struggle for justice and precious traditions of friendship." The message was dated Saturday.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), North Korea's official name, received Kim's message where he also conveyed his "firm belief" that Russia would succeed in defending its sovereignty, security interests, and territorial integrity.
The communication comes in the context of strengthened ties between the two nations, following the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024. This partnership has paved the way for North Korea's military support for Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
On Friday, Kim Jong-un visited a memorial dedicated to Soviet troops who fought against Japan during World War II. This marked his third visit to the site in conjunction with Liberation Day celebrations.
