Seoul: U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday shared a photo on social media of his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in 2019, reiterating his assertion that he and Kim "get along great." According to Yonhap News Agency, the post was made amid ongoing statements from the White House expressing Trump's openness to dialogue with Kim "without any preconditions." However, it remains uncertain if North Korea will engage in talks, especially as it strengthens its economic, diplomatic, and military ties with Moscow. Despite acknowledging the seemingly stern expressions in the photo, Trump commented on Truth Social, "Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we're smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!" This statement underscores the unique rapport Trump claims to have with the North Korean leader. During his first term, Trump met with Kim three times: initially in Singapore in June 2018, followed by a second meetin g in Hanoi in February 2019, and finally in Panmunjom in June 2019. The Panmunjom meeting was noteworthy as Trump momentarily crossed into North Korean territory, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president had done so. In June, Trump also shared a photo of their first meeting in Singapore on Truth Social, fueling speculation about his intentions to revive personal diplomacy with Kim. In a recent analysis, Victor Cha, Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), suggested that Kim might pursue renewed summitry with Trump, possibly after the U.S. midterm elections this fall. This move could be part of a "revisionist" approach by Pyongyang to solidify its status as a nuclear-armed state.
