Daejeon: Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has emerged as the new leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP), setting the stage for significant political maneuvers as the party gears up to support President Lee Jae Myung's legislative initiatives and prepare for the 2028 parliamentary elections. Kim secured his leadership position by garnering 54.08 percent of the votes in a heated contest against Rep. Jung Chung-rae during the party's national convention held in Daejeon.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim stepped down from his role as prime minister earlier this year to pursue the leadership of the DP, a move that aligns him closely with President Lee's agenda. His victory is expected to consolidate Lee's influence over the party, as Kim had promised a "complete alignment" between the party and the presidential office during his campaign.
The election saw the implementation of the DP's newly adopted ranked choice voting system, which came into play as no candidate secured a majority in the initial round. Former DP leader Song Young-gil was eliminated after finishing third. The election marked the first DP leadership race conducted under a one-person, one-vote system, with party delegates and dues-paying members contributing 70 percent to the final result, while the general public accounted for the remaining 30 percent.
Kim's victory was widely anticipated following his strong performance in regional primaries, particularly in the Honam region, which is home to a significant portion of the DP's dues-paying members. In contrast, Jung, known for his hard-line stances, faced criticism from within the party for focusing more on appealing to the party's hard-line supporters rather than aligning with the president on critical issues.
Critics within the party also pointed to Jung's role in the disappointing outcomes of the June 3 local elections, where despite winning 12 of the 16 mayoral and gubernatorial seats, the DP lost key races, including the Seoul mayoral contest. As the newly elected leader, Kim is tasked with steering the party into the 2028 parliamentary elections and advancing President Lee's legislative priorities.
With the DP holding 161 seats in the 300-member National Assembly, the party has the numbers to pass legislation without opposition support. The upcoming 2028 parliamentary elections will be pivotal in determining the legislative momentum President Lee can maintain during the concluding years of his term, which ends in 2030.
