Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung announced plans to host a public movie screening this weekend as part of the celebrations for Korea's 80th Liberation Day anniversary. The event aims to honor the end of Japanese colonial rule over Korea, which lasted from 1910 to 1945.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee shared through social media that he will be watching "La Resistance," a documentary about the Korean independence movement, at a theater in Seoul on Sunday. He provided a website link for the public to apply for participation in the event.
Due to security considerations, the specific location and time of the screening remain undisclosed. Participation will be limited, with attendees chosen randomly to accommodate the seating restrictions. Lee has asked for public understanding regarding this arrangement.
In his social media post, President Lee emphasized the importance of remembering those who contributed to Korea's freedom. "Behind the prosperity and freedom we enjoy today are countless unsung heroes who devoted themselves with indomitable will for liberation and the restoration of our sovereignty," he stated. He invited the public to join in honoring the sacrifices made by these individuals and to reflect on the significance of the 80th Liberation Day.
Liberation Day is observed annually on August 15 and marks the historic end of Japan's colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula.
