Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump was rushed out of the annual White House correspondents' dinner in Washington on Saturday following several loud bangs, with an alleged shooter being taken into custody.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump was seated on the stage in front of a hotel ballroom during the event hosted by the White House Correspondents' Association. Following the loud sounds, Trump was forced to duck and was escorted out by Secret Service personnel. There were no reports of injuries during the incident.
Trump took to Truth Social to commend the quick response by the Secret Service and law enforcement, stating, "Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended." He also mentioned his recommendation to let the event continue, though he deferred the final decision to law enforcement authorities.
The dinner, a significant event in Washington's social calendar, was attended by several high-profile figures, including first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Despite the disruption, Trump expressed his intention to reschedule the event in light of the unexpected developments.
