Kasugai:Kim Joo-hyung, inspired by a text message from Tiger Woods, secured the men's individual gold medal at the Asian Games held at Kasugai Country Club East Course, near Nagoya, Japan.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the message from Woods read, "Just be you. Nothing more, nothing less." This encouragement spurred Kim, who led after 54 holes, to shoot a six-under 64 in the final round, finishing at 18-under 262.
Kim, also known as Tom Kim on the PGA Tour, expressed that he arrived at the tournament believing in his capability to succeed if he remained true to his game. The friendship between Kim and Woods began a few years ago, and they now share a team in the simulator golf league co-founded by Woods.
Kim, who has four PGA Tour victories, including two before turning 21, highlighted the unique pressure of competing internationally with his national flag. He recounted the challenges of maintaining composure throughout the tournament, describing it as the longest week of his life.
After arriving jet-lagged from Medinah, Illinois, Kim managed to overcome the fatigue of travel and the pressure of competition. His performance included a crucial eagle on the par-5 13th hole, extending his lead to four shots. He secured the win despite a bogey on the 17th hole, eventually finishing with a comfortable margin.
Kim expressed relief upon winning, likening it to unloading burdens he had carried all season. He also credited his fans who traveled to Japan for their support, which helped him persevere through the tournament.
Reflecting on future goals, Kim, who previously competed in the Olympics, expressed his desire to win an Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles in 2028, emphasizing his familiarity and comfort with the location.
