Seoul: A sports organization has announced its plans to host an international academic conference in honor of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. According to Yonhap News Agency, KAHPERD revealed that the conference aims to connect the legacy of the 1988 Summer Games, the first Olympics held in South Korea, with current social tasks. It will serve as a platform for discussions on the new values that sport must generate in a rapidly changing environment.
The conference will commence with keynote speeches from four international academics: Clifford Mallett from the University of Queensland, Tania Braga, former head of Olympic Games Impact at the International Olympic Committee, Gerald Fritz of the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Germany, and Bryan McCullick from the University of Georgia.
On the second day, approximately 250 presentations covering a wide array of topics such as sports psychology, sports sociology, and physiology will be delivered. Academics and experts from countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, and China are also scheduled to present their insights.
KAHPERD President Choi Kwan-yong emphasized the significance of the conference by stating, "This year's conference will pose questions on what sport really does to people and society." He encouraged researchers to explore sessions outside their areas of expertise to gain new perspectives and questions.
The conference is set to receive sponsorship from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.
