Seoul: HD Hyundai announced Thursday that its shipbuilding division, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., has been selected as the preferred supplier for an advanced nuclear reactor project led by U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) developer TerraPower.

According to Yonhap News Agency, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has entered into a framework agreement with TerraPower to produce and supply critical reactor equipment for a sodium-cooled fast reactor. This type of reactor aims to enhance sustainability and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional Generation III reactors.

HD Hyundai has been intensifying its efforts to explore nuclear-powered vessel development in collaboration with TerraPower, considering potential applications in the shipbuilding industry.
