Daejeon:The interior ministry has announced new measures to improve the resilience of government information systems, following a significant fire at a state data center last year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the fire occurred on September 26 at the National Information Resources Service's (NIRS) data center in Daejeon, causing extensive damage to servers and disabling crucial online administrative systems, including government websites and local community center networks. It took 95 days to fully restore these services.
The ministry outlined plans to bolster the disaster recovery system, aiming to restore essential administrative information systems linked to daily life within one hour if a disaster strikes. The government will reclassify approximately 15,000 public information systems based on their importance and prioritize disaster recovery systems for 13 core systems, such as the disaster-safety information service and resident registration system, by mid-next year.
Seventy-six systems, identified as the highest A1 level, will implement a dual-operation system with backup maintained at separate data centers to ensure rapid recovery within one hour during a disaster.
A system will be established to allow the NIRS's Gongju Center to replicate 121 systems at the Daejeon Center in real time by the middle of next year. Additionally, data replication systems at the Gwangju and Daegu centers are scheduled to be operational by 2027.
Hwang Gyu-cheol, head of the interior ministry's AI Government Bureau, stated at a media briefing that disaster recovery systems for data storage will be implemented across the NIRS's Daejeon, Daegu, and Gwangju centers by next year, providing a foundation for recovery in the event of a large-scale failure by the end of next year.
