Giants Starter Jeremy Beasley Leverages Sweeper for Early Success in KBO

Seoul: Lotte Giants right-hander Jeremy Beasley, who previously pitched in Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball, has brought his self-confidence to the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) and is finding early success.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Beasley attributes his strong start in the KBO to his ability to execute pitches effectively, particularly his sweeper, a variant of the slider with significant horizontal movement. The 30-year-old pitcher has been pleased with his performance, stating, "I've been throwing a ton of strikes and that's huge for me." Beasley entered his recent game against the Hanwha Eagles with a 1-0 record and a 4.20 ERA, though this was slightly inflated by one tough outing against the SSG Landers.

Beasley's other starts have been impressive, as he allowed just one earned run over 11 innings against the Samsung Lions and the Kiwoom Heroes, striking out 12 batters and walking only two. Reflecting on his rocky second game, Beasley said he remained motivated and satisfied with his pitching despite the unfavorable results.

The sweeper, which Beasley throws about 36 percent of the time, is a key component of his pitching arsenal. He has honed this pitch since his time in Triple-A in 2022, and it has become a reliable tool against hitters from both sides of the plate. Beasley emphasized his trust in the pitch, describing it as a "get-me-over pitch" that can secure a strike when needed.

Beasley also noted the distinct challenges posed by KBO hitters compared to those in Japan's NPB. He remarked, "In Japan, the baseball is dead in a way. So you can kind of get away with mistakes." However, he observed that hitting in the KBO has improved, with players showing individuality in their techniques, akin to American baseball.

As Beasley continues to adapt and excel, his sweeper remains a crucial weapon, baffling even the most formidable hitters like Lewin Diaz of the Samsung Lions, who led the KBO with 50 home runs last year. The pitch's unpredictable movement has left many left-handed hitters perplexed, contributing to Beasley's promising debut season in the KBO.
