Seoul: French-born bishop Rene Marie Albert Dupont, who was known for his extensive pastoral work in rural South Korea, has passed away due to a cerebral infarction. He was 95 years old. Dupont devoted his life to the communities in the region, leaving a significant impact through his dedicated service.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Dupont had been receiving medical care at a hospital in Andong, located approximately 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul in North Gyeongsang Province. This followed emergency surgery he underwent earlier in the week to address the cerebral infarction.
Rene Dupont was born in 1929 in Orleans, France, and was ordained a priest in June 1953. His journey to South Korea began in December 1954, a time when the nation was rebuilding after the Korean War. Over the course of more than 70 years, Dupont committed himself to the pastoral mission, primarily serving rural communities in the central city of Daejeon and other areas throughout South Korea. His work significantly contributed to the spiritual and community life in these regions.
