Seoul: Prime Minister Han Seong-sook asked officials Friday to be on high alert for the heat wave gripping the country, saying each agency should do everything it can to minimize damage.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Han emphasized that a heat wave advisory is in place for most regions of the country, with a possibility of the warning expanding over the weekend. This was discussed during a meeting convened to review measures to cope with the searing heat.

The interior, health, and labor ministries have been tasked with ensuring the protection of vulnerable groups. These include individuals residing in cramped housing units known as "jjokbang" in Korean, the homeless, elderly people living alone, construction workers, and delivery riders.

Furthermore, Han directed the agriculture and maritime ministries to implement necessary measures to prevent damage to farm and fisheries products. In tandem, the climate ministry has been instructed to manage dams and reservoirs appropriately to avert localized water shortages.

Han stressed the importance of maintaining an emergency readiness posture for public safety. She noted that while there is heightened alertness during heavy rains, there is a tendency to let guards down during heat waves. Han urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid outdoor activities, and stay well-hydrated.
