Seoul: The Supreme Court has confirmed a two-year prison sentence for former opposition lawmaker Youn Kwan-suk in relation to a cash-for-votes scandal linked to the Democratic Party (DP)'s 2021 chairman election. According to Yonhap News Agency, the scandal involves allegations that the campaign of former DP leader Song Young-gil distributed cash envelopes amounting to 66 million won (approximately US$47,815) to 20 sitting DP lawmakers and other party members ahead of the party's leadership election in May 2021, which Song won. Youn, who was part of Song's campaign team, faced accusations of receiving 20 cash envelopes from Song's former aide, each containing 3 million won, intended for distribution among DP lawmakers shortly before the election. Prosecutors claimed that Youn's actions were aimed at swaying incumbent lawmakers to ensure Song's election as the party leader. The Supreme Court upheld a lower court's decision, convicting Youn of violating the Political Parties Act, resulting in a two-year priso n sentence. The Seoul Central District Court is anticipated to deliver its verdict for Song Young-gil within the year. Song is currently on trial for alleged violations of the Political Parties and Political Funds Acts, due to his purported central role in the cash envelope distribution scheme.
