Seoul: Democratic Party floor leader Han Byung-do announced that the ruling party is committed to drafting a comprehensive plan to reform the police organization and create a reliable investigation system. This statement came after the body believed to be that of Jang Mi-ran, a missing woman, was discovered on Jeju Island. The search for Jang was delayed due to a police officer's false closure of her missing-person case.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident has garnered significant attention as the police are poised to take on greater investigative responsibilities in October. This shift comes as prosecutors are set to lose their independent and supplementary investigative powers under prosecution reforms led by the ruling party.

During a party meeting at the National Assembly, Han stated, "The Democratic Party will fulfill its responsibilities to the very end in devising a comprehensive plan for the reform of the police organization and establish an investigation system that the public can trust." He emphasized the need to expose the police's errors and hold those involved accountable, urging police leadership to fully investigate the false closure of Jang's case.

Han highlighted the importance of public trust in the police force, asserting that without it, the police have no justification for their existence. He vowed to prevent Jang's case from heightening public anxiety and distrust regarding the new criminal justice system. As police authority is set to expand, Han stressed the need for the police to enhance their investigative capabilities, accountability, transparency, and democratic oversight.
