Cheongju: A construction supervisor associated with the fatal underpass flooding in 2023 has died following an attempt to take his own life at the prison where he was serving a sentence, officials reported on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the supervisor was serving a four-year sentence at a facility in Cheongju, located approximately 110 kilometers southeast of Seoul. His conviction was related to the mismanagement of a river embankment construction project, which was a significant factor in the tragic flooding of an underpass during heavy rain in July 2023. This incident resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals.

The supervisor attempted suicide within the prison and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. The distressing event was initially discovered by a fellow inmate, officials confirmed.
